Just days after the rumor mill expressed that one of hip hop newest leading artist maybe gay. Frank ocean joins the Anderson Cooper movement by coming out. This is perhaps one of the most powerful and personal moves ever made in Hip-Hop/ R&B because these genres have yet to promote a gay/bisexual artist. His album, releasing July 17, holds the heart to his much anticipated confession and will be the first record to have a black male artist sing to/ for another male. It would over simplify the album to say the it’s entirety is about that fruitful summer when he first fell in love but it’s clearly a large part of it. His album, called Channel Orange, comes from “channeling” his thoughts and emotions from that summer, as he posted on Tumblr,

“Orange reminds me of the summer I first fell in love.
But what exactly does all this mean for his career and the Hip-Hop/R&B industry? It means the industry is finally catching up! Yes, Jay-Z has already expressed his support for gay marriage but it’s no secret that Hip-Hop has always been a little slow. Even though Frank may have lost a few fans, he inspired industry leaders to join together and express their full support for the very political standing of being “gay” or “bisexual.” And as far as Frank’s career, his sexual orientation should not play a part in how he is perceived as an artist. He has some of the most original and raw talent this industry has ever seen, being featured on Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Watch The Throne album. Perhaps the true future of his career can be projected when his album releases, but honestly, who couldn’t be inspired and motivated by this album? What are your thoughts?

It comes just five days after the 37-year-old singer appeared in federal court in Newark, New Jersey, to admit she failed to file returns between 2005 and 2007, despite an income of more than $1.8 million from recording royalties.

The mother-of-six could face up to three years in jail – one for each count of evasion - and was released on $150,000.

She will face sentencing in November.

This is the second legal wrangle Lauryn – best known for her work with the Fugees and solo album ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’ – has faced in recent years.

Lauryn found herself in a legal wrangle after her former fashion consultant accused her of stealing clothes.

Company Via Davia Vintage claimed in 2011 Hill took the majority of a ‘wardrobe of high fashion items’ from them after they agreed to provide them for her 2007 tour of Europe.

She was also sued in relation to the tour for harassment and unpaid wages by Jay Gore, a guitarist in her band, who claimed she would insult the band while he toured with her.

Part of the lawsuit stated: ‘After shows, Hill would demand that the musicians and road support personnel attend meetings where she would engage in a person-by-person critique and berating.’

Fashion Week How It Begun?

So fashion week is officially over and the ooh’s and aah’s have just begun so here’s the run down of why fashion week happens and how important it is for not just the fashion world but day to day consumers as well.

What is fashion week?

A fashion week is a fashion industry event, lasting approximately one week, which allows fashion designers, brands or “houses” to display their latest collections in runway shows and buyers and the media to take a look at the latest trends. Most importantly, these events let the industry know what’s “in” and what’s “out” for the season.

Where did it begin?

In 1943, the first french fashion week was held, with one main purpose: to distract attention from World War II with French Fashion, when workers in the fashion industry were unable to travel to Paris. This was an opportune moment - as for centuries, designers in America were thought to be reliant on the French for inspiration. The fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert organized an event she called ‘Press Week’ to showcase American designers for fashion journalist, who had previously ignored their works. The Press Week was a success, and, as a result, magazines like Vogue…which were normally filled with French designs began to feature more and more American innovations.

However, long before Lambert, there were fashion shows throughout America. In 1903, a New York City shop called Ehrich Brothers put on what is thought to have been the country’s first fashion show to lure middle-class females into the store. By 1910, many big department stores were holding shows of their own. It is likely that American retailers saw that they were called ‘fashion parades’ in Paris couture salons and decided to use the idea. These parades were an effective way to promote stores, and improved their status. By the 1920s, the fashion show had been used by retailers up and down the country.

They were staged, and often held in the shop’s restaurant during lunch or teatime. These shows were usually more theatrical than those of today, heavily based upon a single theme, and accompanied with a narrative commentary. The shows were hugely popular, enticing crowds in their thousands – crowds so large, that stores in New York in the fifties had to obtain a license to have live models.Until 1994, shows were held in different locations, such as hotels, or lofts. Eventually, after a structural accident at a Michael Kors show, the event moved to Bryant Park, behind the New York Public Library, where it remained until 2010, when the shows relocated to Lincoln Center.
